Claire raised her rapier to her fathers sword. “Lay on.” He said as he parried her sword away. She recovered and swung with a left horizontal swing at her fathers torso hoping he would block it. Which he did not, and with a simple step to the right he dodged and swung at Claire’s head. She rolled to the left and quickly while standing up removed her dagger and threw it at her father.
Taken by surprise, her father rolled forward barley dodging the dagger and stabbing Claire in her stomach. She winced at the pain that the blunted sword caused. Then backed up holding her stomach.
“Not a bad move Claire!” Her father said in his deep, hearty voice, “I didn’t see that coming!” Claire smiled and tried to think of something to say. “But you still failed to see my minor motions of my roll… Be prepared next time.” And with that he looked at the horizon to the west. The sun was setting. Claire’s father hugged Claire and they shared a embrace for a couple seconds, only to be interrupted by her fathers apprentice, Kryl.
“Master,” He said politely while coming from the door into the house, “A man wishes to see you, he is hooded sir.” Claire’s father frowned as he left Claire and started for the house.
“Kryl come with me,” He ordered, “ And Claire, cook dinner.” Claire waited until her dad went inside before groaning. She loathed having to cook. She would rather fight the raiding pirates and become a hero and a mercenary like her father. But as it happened she was his only child and a female, so she was expected to learn both. Fight, and cook.
She walked through the other door to the kitchen. She wondered why they couldn’t hire a cook. They certainly were rich enough. She walked to the pantry to grab some meat when she heard start to talk, “So you want my apprentice and any one else I can spare to go and kill the Pirate King!”
“The bounty is up to 70,000 gold pieces now,” The stranger replied gently, “ I would give you 20,000 of that.” That made her dad stop, 20,000 gold pieces for his apprentice’s help?
“Agreed, my apprentice will join you.” Her dad said.
“Have you no one else? I thought you would have more apprentices, for you were on the mercenary council were you not?” There was silence.
“No. No one else.” Her dad said gloomily. At that Claire rushed into the very well furnished room.
“I will go,” She said in a proud voice, “I will go with him.” All three people looked at her. There was silence for a couple long moments. “I can do it dad!”
“I have no doubt Claire… I just don’t want to loose you…”
I know its short but its more of a preview then anything. What do ya think?
